One Hundred and Fifty Nine Paws

Dear Leo,

The rain has returned. There is something about the rain in this climate of ours that makes me want to curl up on my blankets and sleep. There is no rest for the weary dog though. We have lots to do this morning. We did the potty, the food, the change, the food, the potty, the walk, and now back to the play time. You’re really into throwing your soft toy balls back and forth and running after them.

At first, when the parents brought the balls out, I thought they were for both of us, but I soon discovered that those balls are too squishy for my mouth and I bit through them once, if I pounce bite at them, as I do the, “shake, shake, shake.” Too bad. I’m left with my toy spikes ball, and the squirrels, when you allow me to play with the squirrels. Sometimes you get quite upset if I try to play with the squirrels and you need to hug and rescue them. I’m not quite sure why you think they need recusing. Squirrels are creatures that bother us larger mammals. They’re nothing but trouble baby! Have you seen the way they taunt me? They chide from the fence and trees and then scamper away before I can have a word with them. Humph. I sound a little bit grouchy, in retrospect now I see this. Perhaps it’s because I have not started my morning nap yet. Mama has been doing a long downward doggy video and I’m ready for some winks. I’ll go check on her now. I love you baby.

One Hundred and Fifty Eight Paws

Dear Leo,

Hi. I am feeling a little bit like that pigeon bird in those books by the Willems author guy. You know the part when the pigeon yells at the duck, “Why, why, WHY?” Sometimes I feel like that about the human rules.

Take this for instance: How come I have to stay in the house when you go move the gnomes? Did you know that momma had 13 gnomes at one point in time? Gnomes are a thing baby. You like them a lot. I don’t quite understand the purpose behind them, but they’re always there kind of looking at me with that doe eyed, “I can’t close my eyes,” kind of look. One of the gnomes was your baby for a while, in our backyard. You would carry it around, give it mud baths, hugs, and kisses. Then, one day you dropped it and it’s pointy hat was no more. Which, honestly was totally fine by me! Haha, but don’t tell mama. We moved it to the outside table where it sits and stands guard with any flowers that you find.

Each day you move the front yard gnomes around on the patio. There are three that are quite heavy so you point to those ones and say, “Mama or Dada!” Then the big humans move those gnomes, which is good because, I’d drag the gnomes around for you if I could, but having me out front in the yard where other doggies are sometimes is a little bit too much with you, the gnomes and other toys. So I watch you. I watch out the peek-a-boo window and also from the piano room window, and sometimes I’ll run upstairs to our office aka the book room and watch from there too; if you venture too far away in the driveway, which I can’t see from the other windows. I have my spots so I can keep my eyes on you!

I love you baby,

Kimmy

Let’s hold hands and go on an adventure please!

One Hundred Fifty Seven Paws

Dear Leo,

BOOM! That’s what we heard a lot today. We saw eleven trucks, that includes counting the garbage truck and recycle truck that we saw twice each. We saw a, “Wheee-oooo, wheee-ooo,” truck a few times too! Something big was happening in the land of human buildings where peoples sleep and live behind our home. I’m not so sure what the happening were, but we heard a lot of sirens and I watched you and mama watch them outside of the peek-a-boo window. You and mama counted all the trucks, I stood guard and watched.

On our walk we saw more trucks and watched, waved, and observed their work on the sidewalks. You loved seeing all of the trucks and helped them work with adding some sound effects to their business. Mama stopped many times to let me get smells and take pictures of the flower, leaves, and bush things outside. I kept trying to guide her, oh so gently, towards the good smells, but she would pull me back and say, “Sit,” in her stern mama voice. So, I would reluctantly sit until I could feel the leash pull back and relax and then I’d go right back towards the smells. YOU, buddy, found all of this hilarious and laughed, and laughed, and laughed. Thanks for laughing with me, mama is so silly sometimes!

I love you buddy,

Feeling a little sideways today.

One Hundred and Fifty Six Paws

Dear Leo,

Yesterday I had a little tummy troubles during our nap time. I don’t know quite what was bothering me, but I just barfed a bit and went back to napping. Then, mama and dada came to check on you and do the wake up thing, they found the gross stuff and cleaned it up. Laters, my tummy got upset again. Mama made me special snack-y food with egg and it helped me feel better. I had some chicken meat in the foods at dinner time and before bedtime. My tummy is betters.

I tried cuddling on the bed for night nights with the big humans. I didn’t last too long up there because I take up a quarter of mama’s part of the bed and dada. I was just trying to stretch out and be comfortable. I’m not sure what the problem was exactly, but I ended up sleeping in my bed, but it’s super cozy. I have a foam mattress, sleeping bag, and two cuddly towels underneath me, so it’s not so bad to get off the human’s bed. Although, it can be rather insulting, but I must say, I do understand that we all need our space from time to time. Woof! Nap time now!

“Knock, knock, hello?!”

One Hundred and Fifty Five Paws

Dear Leo,

The sun has left us. I’m not sure where this layer of gray blanket clouds came from, but I’m already missing the sunshines. I didn’t feel like getting up this morning. So I went from my bed, to stretching, to a quick potty with mama, and then back to a bed. Mama had to gently drag me off the bed to even get me downstairs for the morning breakfast. I would have eaten my food on the bed, had she brought it to me, but listen baby, that doesn’t happen unless you’re a tiny human and you do the milks. Then it’s just milks all day long on the bed and naps. Well, I guess I’m awake now.

We took a walk with the dada and mama did the downward doggy upstairs. I’m helpful with your play time. I follow you around from space or spot to spot, I boop your toys and check to make sure that you’re making safe choices. You’ve been into this new game of, “Throw the balls, everywhere!” I’m not quite sure where to go when you’re playing this game, so I often times opt for underneath the table or a chair. That way, my head is covered… I find the safest spot for my doggy self. That game lasts only so long, then you dump all the balls out of the container, if you were throwing them into one, and then we move onto another game like, move all the trucks to the window sill or the couch, or in front of a door and line them up. Sometimes we do the painting, art time, puzzles, build a fort, play on my bed, or launch ourselves on and off the couch. I like when we take naps or cuddle with blankets and books. But, you’re a busy kid, so I have to keep up with you. I love you baby.

Looking for the Who’s.

One Hundred and Fifty Four Paws

Dear Leo,

Guess what?! THE SUNSHINE HAS RETURNED. I loved the sunshine so much that I stood and just sniffed, basking in the light on the back patio. It brought me a lot of puppy dog joy to feel the sun’s rays on my back. You and mama were very busy doing the grass weed pulling business by the flower box. I’m not sure why you all do that, but I come and check in every few minutes, nose mama, step in between where you and she are working and then I go about my doggy business.

We even took an adventure ride in the car to mail a letter at the post office. I’m used to this trip by now and I know to just sit, relax, and rest my head on the back part of the car to soak up what sunshine I can as we drive through space and time. You talked to me, looked around, and gave your Nala lion some hugs. I enjoyed being with you and mama because then I can keep my eyes on you two and know that you’re safe and sound. We talked with a friend through the loud speaker thing in the car, I’m not sure where the voice comes from, but it comes through loud and clear!  I didn’t fee like going upstairs for the nap time with you because the sun was shining in through the family room and I needed more time to relax with my sunny friend. See you in our nap dream. I love you baby!

CHECKING THE ANGLES OF LIFE.

One Hundred and Fifty Three Paws

Dear Leo,

Hi. This morning you took me on a walk, mama thinks we’re all the cutest triad she’s ever seen when we go out on our morning walk and she watches from the window. She did more downward dog stuff and then some dancing video with someone talking. You were really nervous and kind of shy when mama had the dance video thing on. You walked in and out of the room, checked on the video, and then played around the mama.

Dada went on one of his long run ‘about’s’ the outside. I stood guard for all of us upstairs and checked in on you two. At one point you were playing with mama’s pilates ball and throwing it around into the empty boxes you love as your toys. I snuck off to my bed and took a little nap so that I could have energy for after the morning workouts. I needed my energies because we played outside in the yard and I must do at least ten circles or figure eights in the yard to get my fill of sunshine and run time in. Then we put dirt on the patio, swept it off and did that again a few more times. We watched the neighbor mow part of their lawn through the fence and I raced back and forth to make you laugh while you were saying, “Hi!” to the neighbors. I love you baby. Have a nice nap, see you in the sunshine dream.

One Hundred and Fifty Two Paws

Dear Leo,

Today is another bright, cheerful, sunny morning as a family. Our routine feels slightly different, but we’re all together as one pack right now, and that feels great. I like having everyone here at home together. You’ve started to say, “Home,” too and I know what that means! The other day you cuddled up to me when I curled up on your pillow/blanket fort. Mama took a picture of us in the fort and I must say, we probably make the cutest pair around!

Sometimes I moan or yawn when you curl up next to me because I’m a little unsure about what is happening, but I love you none the less. We took a nice long walk this morning and I encountered many, many unusual smells. You saw two small excavators moving a giant tree stump in a new property down the road. You were so excited to see if the trucks were out that you kept saying, “Beep, beep, beep, beep,” all the way around the neighborhood on our walk. I knew where we were headed because of your sound effects. I like that watching trucks spot too because it is right next to the community garden and there are so many delicious doggy smells over at that spot. I was told to, “Sit Kimmy,” so I sat for a moment and then I slowly crept over to gain the smells I was getting drifted my direction. I loved it! We saw five dogs on our walk including the husky that talks to me from behind his fence. I like him. You like him too and you greet him with your woof, woof’s from the stroller. Ok, gotta go catch up to you in the yard, it’s time to run! Love you,

Hold still buddy!

One Hundred and Fifty One Paws

Dear Leo,

This morning all the adult humans are still here. The dada went to a grocery store for us all. We played with the mama, did the dishes, and you helped mama play the piano for a while. You seemed to like the music time a lot. You sang, “Ya ya ya ya yaaaaahhhhh,” a lot of times. I like to lay down underneath the piano so that I can feel the vibrations and be near mama’s feet. I like that feeling of closeness and belonging.

We went outside with the mama when dada returned and went on his wild doggy run out in the world. I liked our romp time in the yard. You helped mama sweep, dump dirt on the patio and then sweep some more. I chased smells in the air and then we collected dandelion flowers to keep on the table. The sun shone down on us so I felt warm and happy. You’ve taken to telling me, “No!” whenever I am eating grass or flowers now, so that’s a new thing. You’re backing up the mama and dada when they lay down the rules for me. I know that you think you’re the boss of me, but I’m really the true boss of the house aka the pack leader! I love you baby. Enjoy your oatmeal, applesauce, banana foods. I like watching you eat it, even from my bed, from afar.

xo,

Kimmy

Leaning into friendship.

One Hundred and Fifty Paws

Dear Leo,

Today has been a sunny day for us all. You, dada, and I went on a walk early in the morning time. Mama did the downward doggy yoga and we walked around our neighborhood. We saw the garbage truck and some squirrels. We looked for the big construction trucks, but we didn’t see any this morning. Well, maybe I should back up a little bit here.

When we were about to do the stroller leash, harness deal in the garage dad suddenly scooped you up and ran to the front door. I was left in the garage wondering what in the world was going on. I soon realized it was the garbage truck hello and good bye’s that were happening outside. I don’t always play a part in that game. I do like the garbage worker, quite a bit because you like them too. It’s the same person each week and that brings you a lot of joy. We wave, “HI!!! And provide ample sound effects for the pickup of the cans.” I like to stand at our peek-a-boo window and wait for you and the parent human to come back inside. My favorite part of the whole thing is knowing that we’ll soon go on a special walk together for our morning exercise which is my favorite. I lead the way and perk up my ears when I see someone or something coming. I have a little bit of extra pep in my step today because I just had a bath with the soap yesterday, so I’m a shiny dog. Nap time!

Love you buddy,
