Two Hundred and Eight Paws

Dear Leo,

Today mama had one of her, “boop, boop, beep, beep,” doctor appointments in the morning. We all slept in a little bit, but you managed to get up in time to see the garbage truck arrive and dump our bins from the small street we live on. That was the first highlight of your day! You and I helped dada make pancakes with stuff in them for breakfast. You seemed to really enjoy helping with the kitchen cooking business. I sat patiently and watched to see if anything would drop down that might need some licking up.

Mama read you this book about a bug that goes kerchooooo and you found it quite funny. I just sat and waited for my pancake, but it didn’t come. I had a nice breakfast of crunchy foods earlier than your pancake, but I just assumed that I would get a tasty one too. After mama left for her doctor appointment you, dada, and I went on a long sunshine walk together. I loved being warm and watching all the creatures stir in the sunlight. I had not been on a walk in a couple of days and I missed it. I don’t like to leave mama’s side, so today was a nice change for me. You seemed quite pleased to be outside too.

After our walk you went on a long run with dada around the neighborhood. You told me about some tiny goats that you saw near the neighborhood park! They sounded quite funny because you said they kept saying, “Baaa-baaaa-baaaa.” I don’t know what that means because I don’t speak goat or sheep, whichever one it is. I speak doggy and some human language too. I mostly speak the language of FOOD! I see food, I want to eat food, they drop food, I investigate the food, you get the picture. I love you lil’ dude.

Sandy dog moments: Tongue out Tuesday.

Two Hundred and Seven Paws

Dear Kimmy,

There are some new things happening around our home right now. I make sense of them by talking them out before my nap and bed time. I like to verbally process, as mama calls it. I talk about a lot of things during those times. Sometimes you talk before you go to sleep too.

I notice that you give a lot of sighs and harrumphs before you nap. We both like to talk things out I guess. That’s another thing we have in common, big sister dog. I find it funny when you talk them out though because you have high and low pitched sounds and once in a while you will say more than one harrumph in a row. Those are the best moments of talking.

We have brought in new furniture, put up curtains, and also moved things around in the upstairs part of the house mostly. I know that we will have a new little human coming here soon, and I think you know it too. You won’t come on walks or runs with dada and I if mama is not with us. You seem really worried about our mama and you don’t like to leave her. I just say, “Bye bye mama,” and I blow her a kiss. Maybe you should try that? It might help you to know that she is ok and that you can leave the house. Yesterday we tried giving you some cookies before you left the house, but you didn’t want to leave the driveway. I understand, sometimes we just need to stay put in order to feel safe. I love you Kimmy-Kim dog.

Paws in the sand, nose in the air, living the beach life as a dog for a moment in time.

Two Hundred and Six Paws

Dear Leo,

“Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in, let the sunshine, let the sunshine in,” I heard that once when mama and dada were watching a musical called, “Hair.” That song stuck with me because I love the sunshine so much. I think I was meant to sing it, but who knows? Us dogs have a lot of pathways that lead us to our destinies.

We enjoyed some running around silliness time this morning in our back yard. You were super duper helpful and checked for all the doggy number two’s in the space. You reported back to the mama and she used the pooper scooper. Now that you know the words and phrases to so many different every day things, you love to be a helper and identify everything you know with words. Sometimes though, lil’ dude, I don’t need your human help. I would rather you act like a doggy, like me and be silly instead of, “in charge.” But, alas, time goes all too quickly in my opinion, and you think you are in charge of me now. As all humans perceive at some point in time. I just want you to remember to keep the silliness in the forefront of your puppy dog mind and not get too side tracked from what’s most important in our relationship here: play. I love you buddy!

Just casual resting here mama, look away, the pillows are fine!

Two Hundred and Five Paws

Dear Leo,

You are my tiny brother. I’m not sure why you only have two of your four legged paws working at a time, but irregardless, I get you to play with me on all fours daily. You chase me around pretty good on two legs, but I’m still faster than you are. Hehehe, no need to brag. It’s the doggy truth.

Earlier today, during our game of chase, you kept going to, “home base,” which is mama, but I felt like that was cheating because you egged me on to play from the start. So, naturally being the accommodating creature I am, I did! I goosed you with my nose in your back and you went running to mama and didn’t want to play anymore. I just maintained puppy dog play position and leapt up when you released your hold on mama. “Haha, woof!” And then right back to mama you went.

You’re a funny lil’ dude sometimes. I know that I’m a big lab-plotthound doggy, but you gotta play fair here buddy. If you wanna play chase or ball, then I’m all in. I’m going to nap and we can get back to our play later today. I love you.

Two Hundred and Four Paws

Dear Leo,

It was another rainy day in the neighborhood. Who knew that it could rain so much in one place? I think I blank out the weather from this time of year for a specific reason, the wet is just soggy. There is no if, and’s, or’s about it. It exists, it’s part of our season, but I prefer the sunshine. I’d like to hop on a little adventure car ride with you and go visit our cousin in the warm desert. You’d probably really enjoy the constant sunshine. I know that it gets unbelievably hot in the desert though, so you know, the grass always appears to be greener I guess?!

You had a nice froggy romp session out back in between the giant rain clouds of the afternoon. We were able to take a nice post rain walk this evening. I loved all the fresh smells. Sometimes when I want to get some really good smells in, I take big whiffs, and taste them with my mouth. You find this to be quite funny. I have a good sense of humor, but, I think you’re rather generous with your laughter. I appreciate the laughs though, it’s my favorite sound that you make. We’re both pretty tired this evening. You had a long, long hug session with mama and dada before bed time. You gave me extra loving pets during and after your stories. I love how gentle you have become when it comes to Kimmy TLC. Thanks lil’ dude. I love you.

Couch time mama, shh!

Two Hundred and Three Paws

Dear Leo,

Hi buddy! The sky is blue, the sun shined bright, and the smells were out and about on our walk this morning. I loved being able to get on a scent trail towards the end of our walk. Dada wasn’t really interested in following it though. I’m not sure why he wouldn’t play along. You would have done a marvelous job trailing along with me, had you been second to my command on the trail. Alas, the big humans don’t always follow our leads little dude. I keep working on them though. You took wolf-ie stuffed dog with us on our walk and he worked on his leaf booping skills. He works quite hard when you cue him to boop on command. I don’t understand the leaf booping skill so I leave it to the mute stuffed creatures. I use my sniffer to hunt down trails, as I was saying earlier.

Today we also had a couple of phone chats with our friends and family. You were talking to another little dude on the phone. He’s a bit older than you though, by three years to be exact. You had fun watching him romp around and listening to how he likes to play. I encouraged you by pushing you with my nose and giving you back licks every time you hopped up onto the couch. I know that you didn’t want me to give you slurps, but it’s just my way. I helped mama do the downward dog work upstairs while you caught up with the beach grandma and grandpa. They have my friend Stanzi at their house, but we haven’t played in quite a while. She’s grown into a more mature pup now. I remember when she would try to jump on me, but I’m pretty tolerant, seeing as I have a small puppy human in yourself to contend with at home. I understand the ways of the puppy-hood. I love you buddy. Dream on!

Daddy lap cuddles are the best.

Two Hundred and Two Paws

Dear Leo,

I’ve been eating this special peanut butter spoon thing two times a day for a while now since we went to the vet. I have a sneaking suspicion that there is more than peanut butter in that spoonful, but I’m not going to say no to some peanut butter! I mean, who would? I guess, maybe if they were allergic to it, but that goes without saying, make good choices.

I have been feeling a little bit happier with my skin since all the peanut butters and it definitely helps me when I am outside in the grass. My back still gets itchy sometimes, especially if it’s scratched a lot by a human, but I deal with it. I would say that I feel 98% better and so I am back to my usual shenanigans of guarding, barking at large trucks outside the house, and playing with you all day except when it’s nap time for us.

I actually just woke up! There was a rumbly engine outside of our house and so I gave a big woof woof from upstairs. You were talking to dada about getting up, so it was appropriate timing. Golly, those trucks worry me. I’m going to lay by the front door now and guard us. There’s a random object on the front porch that is an unidentified package without my consent of delivery. These packages keep coming every few days and no one has been clearing it with me. I gotta go alert mama. I love you buddy.

Couch pets and cuddles.

Two Hundred and One Paws

Dear Buddy,

Hi there. You’ve taken to saying, “No mama, no hi, hiya!” I’m not quite sure why, but it’s funny irregardless. Anything that makes you laugh I am generally down for. There are a few exceptions to that comment I just made though. I am not fond of when you chase after me with wheeled objects. I am not quite sure about how fast those objects move or what they might feel like if I were to collide with them. So I run, I can run really fast and I can also leap over things when they are approaching me. You find that hilarious, especially if we’re having a chase romp in the backyard. I can leap all over the place outside. I can even leap through the garden box or the vegetable box too! I know that you are playing with me and getting me to run around like a crazy Kimmy dog when you run at me, but all the same, with that being said, the wheeled things have got to go.

First of all, I don’t have wheels, second of all it’s just not fair to compare me to a moving plastic car, and last of all, see the first two reasons. Besides which, you don’t quite like it when the objects are put to bed in a closet for a while. Although, you’re pretty smart for your britches now and you know where things go when it’s, “Night night car,” times in the house. I need to rest up and nap now because we had a walk and a car adventure this morning. We are going to have another adventure later to drop off paper envelopes so I will see you in dream land.

Garden smells.

Two Hundred Paws

Dear Leo,

Hi lil’ dude. I don’t have too much to report to you today. We had a nice walk, you went on a run with daddy and I helped mama do her downward dog yoga. I supervised from the bed, that is. She stopped and gave me hugs and kisses, I liked that. I was honestly watching out the window at the squirrels scavenging the cherry tree outside our fence.

Those squirrels lil’ dude, they drive me nuts! Haha, get it, and they eat nuts?! Haha! Get it, they eat nuts… I rest my case. Alright, moving forward, after our nap we went on an adventure as a family. For the last couple of months every time we leave the house, “for an adventure,” I accompany you in the back seat.

Mama and dada do my voices and share what I might be thinking and you will laugh and laugh and laugh because you think it is so funny to watch me and hear what they say. Sometimes I get worried, ok? And so that means that I will make funny sound, whine, stand up, and perk my ears in funny ways when one of parents leave the car. I like my pack to be together! Mama had you, “in stitches,” as they say, for a good three minutes, and then dada returned to the car and I settled back into the seat and stared at you for the remainder of the drive. I’m glad I could be of some form of entertainment to you. CLEARLY I am hilarious. I’ll take it. I am funny, what can I say?! I love you baby boy.

Doggy beauty.

One Hundred and Ninety Nine Paws

Dear Leo,

It must be spring time because I don’t know what is happening with this weather system that is going on right now. We had the NICEST sunniest weather and I was living my best life out in it each day with you. Today it has rained and rained and rained. I hid under the table this morning when it was time for me to go outside and do my business. I wasn’t feeling it, the rain on my paws, that is. I just don’t appreciate the feeling of being wet and then having to face the indignity of being dried off, again. Once was enough in the early morning. But alas, I did and I lived through it.

The best part of the morning was when we all ventured out between showers and took in the fresh air with our morning walk. We saw construction, squirrels, a digger, cats in windows, cars driving by, rain falling from tree branches, and wet leaves. You seemed to enjoy yourself too. You had a, “snack cup, and water,” with you which was apparently quite entertaining for more than half of the walk. I like snacks too lil’ dude. I think you forgot that fact though because you neglected to share any of the snacks with me. Hmmm, maybe next time I could stick my nose into the stroller and you might pass me a snack more promptly? I’ll consider it. I love you buddy, dream on!
