Ninety Two Paws

Dear baby,

We need to talk. You have taken up the habit of, “playing,” with me by grabbing my paws or legs. I have something to say about this: I am not into it.

Mama and dada say, “Stop, or looks like you want to play with Kimmy?” Mama and dada are good at showing you how to give me pets or hugs instead. Most of the time you stop the pulling, but then you’ll try be on the sly and do it again and I get really jazzed up about it. So in turn, I jump around, and then invariably run around the room like a crazy doggy. This makes you laugh really hard and try to run after me. Then all chaos breaks loose and we’re racing around together over and over again, until one of us flops.

Now, admittedly, I don’t mind the game called, “Chase Kimmy dog around,” but I’d prefer that you don’t grab my paws anymore baby. Does that sound ok to you? You only have two legs so I don’t think it would be fair to grab one of your legs in return, and I have four legs. Let’s work on not grabbing, but maybe instead, throw a toy for me? I love you regardless. Your pal for life,

“Did someone say the sunshine is coming back?”

Ninety One Paws

Dear Leo,

This morning we had a fun time romping about in our back yard while a very loud dump truck moved things in the lot behind our house. You were quite excited about all of the commotion. You asked mama to help you climb up the baby tower again and again so you could peak over the fence and watch the action. I just took my time sniffing for clues and I decided that it was just boring human stuff and nothing to be truly concerned about from a dog’s perspective. I kept running to the back door hoping that we would go on our walk as soon as possible.

Finally we headed back into the house! We had a nice time on our walk. You brought along a book that had fun things to touch, scratch, stick, and poke. You dropped it only one time, shared your feelings about not having it back, and then held it for almost the entire rest of the way home. Mama and I were proud of you. You also helped walk me by holding my leash while mama still held it from above. You do a nice job of not pulling me and also calling me to stay close by your stroller. Sometimes you have to give the leash back to mama when another doggy walks by us, but most of the time you walk the block and a half back while holding onto my leash. By the way, leashes, for the most part, are really for the humans. Did you know that? They might get lost if they didn’t have a leash to guide them, so that’s why us dogs wear the leashes baby. I saw a baby on a leash once, that was kind of funny, but like I said, humans get lost without them, so I can understand why a small human would be wearing one. I love you.

Oh what glee to run and be free!

Ninety Paws

Dear Leo,

Today I took charge of the stuffed animal friends and took some off the shelf in the other room. You didn’t see me steal the stuffy-s until I was laying on one of them and happily chewing away. The funny thing was that you had your own toy in your hand, but for some reason the mere sight of me with the stuffy set you off with some pretty big feelings. I conceded and we then played together. That, admittedly was much more fun. As the big humans say, “Two heads are better than one,” and that must also go for playing together is more fun than alone anyhow.

Right now I have taken over the fluffy blanket on the couch and am snuggled away for a long sleepy nap with you. One of my favorite times of the day is, yep, you guessed it, nap time. I love to relax, be in doggy dream land, and not be disturbed. Occasionally mama does these things on a soft and squishy mat that I must investigate, but most of the time she leaves me alone until it is time to get you up from your dreamland. I’ll see you soon baby.

“Ok baby, but just this one time I’ll be the look out for you! Mama’s coming, quick grab the salt ‘n pepper shakers!”

Eighty Nine Paws

Dear Leo,

Today it rained, all morning long. It rain, rain, rained on us while we played, walked, and then watched the squirrels from inside the house. I got so wet from our walk that mama needed to towel dry me off in the garage which made me feel really silly and wiggly. You found that hilarious too. Mama had to change her fur because she got so wet too! But not you baby. You didn’t get wet at all! You have this rain jacket thing that goes over your stroller that repels the rain. Like the word, repel? It’s fancy isn’t it?! You held onto your bunny rabbit stuffed animals on the walk and talked to us about all kinds of things. From about half way through the walk onward I was busy shaking off the rain from my face and ears. I don’t like when the rain runs into my eyes, or down my ears because then I feel bogged down, like a wet dog!

The sunshine has now broken through the clouds and I see fast moving big puffy clouds in the sky. I decided to go back to sleep after mama got finished moving things around. It’s important that I get many naps in so that I can keep up with you in the afternoon and evening time. We have a lot of play time ahead of us baby. Nigh, nigh, as you say.

“Snuggle time Kimmy!”

Eighty Eight Paws

Dear Leo,

Today you woke up a little bit early, we had fun playing in your kitchen space for a little while. I like to be able to get all your baby smells first thing in the morning because we’ve been apart all night. I worry about you when I can’t have you with me. That’s a doggy’s job though, really it is.

You came home from the place they call a, “pool,” this morning. Your hair was a little bit damp and you smelled funny, but I licked you just the same and loved your baby hugs. Mama said that you two went down the slide, that sounds exciting and concerning at the same time. I think if I had been there I would have jumped into the pool after you and doggy paddled around for balls with you. Maybe we’ll go into the water sometime together, but I’m really not fond of it, so on second paw, maybe not. I’ll probably just watch you and pant. That’s surely what I would do! I love you baby.

Busy bees at work!

Eighty Seven Paws

Dear Leo,

Today we had a quiet walk around our neighborhood. You held onto your special tiger stuffed animal almost all the way home. As we walked down the last block toward home you started talking about something and mama stopped, luckily we realized that you had dropped your tiger friend Tai!

Fun fact for you baby: Did you know that Tai was actually daddy’s stuffed animal? He has realistic eyes kind of like my eyes if you look closely. You snuggled, examined and talked to him all the way home after his rescue. You seem to really love holding a friend close to you when you travel in the stroller or car now. I like that you get much more snuggly as you get older. You snuggle with me, which I love, until you touch my paws. I have feelings about paw touching for a number of reasons even though dada and mama would play with my paws when I was a tiny pup. I just prefer to be in charge of where my paws land. Kind of like how you prefer to be in charge of where you put your body and when.

For instance this morning you climbed up and down the stairs by yourself. You kept saying, “Baby, heheehehe, yay!” I waited for you on the landing and you plopped down one stair at a time and mama did too because she was making sure you wouldn’t flop down more than one at a time. It was all fun and games until you turned back around to go do it again and got picked up because it was time to go to your baby library class. Then we all heard your feelings and thoughts about that. So, as I was saying baby, don’t touch the paws. I like the cuddles. I like the snuggles. We’ll keep it at that.

“Hold still buddy!”

Eighty Six Paws

Dear Leo,

Hi baby! This morning we were rough house playing and you were super wound up, as mama and dada say. All of a sudden we were playing and then you were crying, I think you got bumped when you were crawling around on the floor and I bumped into you, accidentally. You sat in mama’s lap for a while and I gave you licks and then laid down in my bed because I wasn’t sure about what I was supposed to do. You recovered with a book about a giant red dog, and then we went back to play time.

I get super excited and happy when you start running around. So naturally I want to run around with you too! Mama says that I am a big doggy and that I don’t always know my own strength, whatever that means. I just do a lot of bumps into people in general. Most of the time it is intentional so that they’ll snuggle up with me, but other times I’m just walking here everybody! I’m groaning at mama now because she’s writing all of this down. I think I better go and edit it with her. I love you baby.

“Are you photographing us momma?”

Eighty Five Paws

Dear Leo,

This morning we played outside together and it was not as cold as it was yesterday. Your shovel or trowel as mama and dad say, was not frozen with water, we learned that when you splashed the water down. It surprised you and mama and we all laughed. When you checked on your castle or play structure for humans, as I like to call it, you found a tiny moss seedling.

You and mama went on a little moss hunt in the backyard and I waited for you as patiently as I could because I wanted to have warm paws again. I love playing for a while outside, and then I want to get warm and be inside or on our walk! When you poked at the mosses all around the yard you had a fun time discovering all the fuzzy textures. I had never really paid much attention to the fact that moss grows all over the place in the outside land. I just like to romp on it because it is squishy and feels kind of like carpet underneath my paws. Mama said it is time to wake up so we’re going to go get you now and start playing again! Maybe we’ll get to play with the new spiky ball you got for me at the doggy store, but you also think it’s your toy, so we’ll talk about that again. I love you baby,

“Attack of the baby dog!”

Eighty Four Paws

Dear Leo,

Sometimes our routine changes during the day. I think between the two of us I don’t like changes as much as you do. My go to way of processing it is running around in a circle. I get the feelings outside of myself after I run. This particular morning we all had a snack before the walk. I didn’t have the patience to wait for my snack, but I tried! I leaned in and drooled on mama’s lap while you said, “Brea-brea!!!” Aka bread. That was a pretty successful snack beg session until she finished up. Then it was back to racing around until I moved the hallway carpets and got to go to the garage to chill out before our walk. Once I was in the garage I was overjoyed because that is where I wanted to be in the first place.

It all worked out. We had a nice walk and I only jumped two times when I saw other doggies. You talked to your baby stuffed animal monkey for half of the walk about going, “Nigh-nigh,” and gave him hugs and kisses. He’s a pretty loved stuffy toy! I love you baby,

Eighty Three Paws

Dear Leo,

Hello buddy! Today you went with the mama to the book place. You didn’t smell like soap when you came home though. I wonder if they did the bubbles with you? I’m currently sleeping on part of the blankets on the couch to hold up your fort. It’s an important job and I don’t want to let you down. So I figured that snoozing on your blankets would help assure that the fort stays in tact.

This morning we played, “Chase, change spots quick,” together. You laughed and laughed and laughed. I got so excited at one point that I decided to race around and around and around upstairs. You laughed so hard and flopped on my doggy bed. I admit, I was really pretty into it, but I was also just so happy to hear you laugh so much. It’s one of my favorite sounds. I love to see you happy and excited to play with me. Best doggy buddies for life!

“Did you want to chew on it too baby?”
