Thirty Two Paws

Dear Leo,

Hi buddy. Today you were grabbing my tail during the pre-snack snack banana oatmeal applesauce deal. I did not really like that, but I was not about to move on account that there were bananas involved. It’s both of our favorite fruit ok, and momma said if I sat that I would get some ‘nana,’ as you say, and besides which, you had some ‘nana’ in your mouth. There was no need to go pulling my tail along to get me to move. It doesn’t make the mama move faster. In my experience, she moves slower if you start trying to get her to move faster. So it’s counter intuitive, there’s something for your vocabulary journal baby. We called a truce during snack snack in your high chair and we played during nap.

But I guess you were extra tired from your park play date with mama because you went back to sleep after waking up and sort of crying for a moment. Sometimes I do that… well I do that a lot actually. It feels nice to switch positions during nap time. I like to start off on the couch, facing in or out, most of the time I face out because someone is in the room with me and I have to keep an eye on them, you know. Then I switch to the other side of the couch to get more comfiness going on. After that I like to move to the window space for a bit of sunshine, if it happens to be shining. Lastly, I lay on the stairs landing space. That’s a good in between spot to make sure I catch all the smells and know where all the humans are at. It’s also a great position to make sure I can alarm us all if someone happens upon the front porch, like they do with the packages of secret human things.

I love you little buddy. I’ll try to catch up to this second nap right now. Meet at the slide?

Love,

Kimmy

Thirty one paws

Dear Leo,

Today started out pretty rainy. We went on our walk around the neighborhood anyway. I didn’t mind the rain too much. My coat is pretty thick because I’m a dog, and besides I am part labrador retriever so I have special paws and thick doggy hair. Sometimes I don’t like going out in the rain, especially if momma or dada say I should go potty. I like to stand and stare at them to make them understand that I really don’t want to be in the rain. They don’t always get the memo, as the grown humans say. Then you and momma left and went somewhere. You came back smelling like books, other babies, soap bubbles, and carpet. I think you went to the place called the library but I can’t be too sure. Momma confirmed my suspicions when she brought a bag in that smelled in concurrence with that place. I have only seen the outside of, the library, but I know a lot about it. Here’s what I know:

  1. Momma likes it.
  2. We bring things back to the metal box, all sorts of things, books with the letters and pictures inside, plastic and metal things with cd and dvds that go into the black boxes at home, and sometimes maps.
  3. I like to sniff all the library things.
  4. We borrow it, momma and dada say, so we have to be CAREFUL with them.
  5. You’re not allowed to chew on the library things. I tried that when I was a puppy. It didn’t go over well, don’t do it baby.
  6. Even if you feel like it, don’t chew on the things.

It’s time for the nap-nap. You’re already there so I have to race off to the dream spot and I’ll see you soon buddy. I love you,

Kimmy

Thirty Paws

Dear Leo,

We picked carrots in our garden this morning. You helped mama and dada by holding the metal container, I think it’s called a colander. When we were almost finished picking the carrots you dumped the basket into the dirt. That was fun because then I went to sniff them and get good smells. When we were inside I got to taste the carrot. Sometimes I like to chew a little bit and then spit some out onto the floor because it helps me to smell it better. You picked up what I put on the floor and you handed it back to me. That made me feel really happy, thanks baby.

I like how we shared bananas and any food really. It makes my day when I get a snack-a-snack too. Sometimes you get upset and don’t want to share with me, but I understand that because if it’s really tasty I don’t like to share either. Usually our human parents make us share though. Mama says, “Sharing is caring,” so that’s why I always give your fingers licks after you are done eating your food. It helps to share the food and I care about you being extra puppy dog clean, so I do that for you!

I love you baby. We’re both going to have a nap now so I’ll meet you there. Dream time!

xoxo,

Kimmy

Twenty nine paws

Dear Leo,

Hi baby! This morning we played with the bouncy glowing ball in the house. You threw the ball for me and I chased it! We had a fun time getting to run around the house. When the bouncy ball got stuck underneath the refrigerator, you went over for me because I was trying to dig it out, which wasn’t working so well, and you pulled it out for me and then threw it again. I really liked that. Thanks baby boy! You’re a helper now, who knew you’d have such useful thumbs on your human paws?!

It was also quite exciting to watch the roof cleaner guys today. They were making all sorts of noise on our house! We saw one of the guys sweeping the roof and you were knocking on the window and saying, “DADA,” but silly baby, that wasn’t dada, but momma told you that. You call all human men dada, and all the ladies seem to be Mamie or Mimi, but generally grandma’s are Mimi too. You just have to know how you say it, which I know so we’re doing fine.

I love how we team up and work on playing and exploring things together now! Thanks for being my buddy Leo. I love you!

Gotta rest when I can.

Twenty eight paws

Dear Leo,

Today Grandpa visited and I saw him for a minute and then I took a nap upstairs so that you guys could play. I must have napped for a long time because it was almost the dinner time when you came and got me. I love when you feed me and come calling for me before the suppertime. You run over to the closet that contains the foods and you help momma open the bag, scoop the food for me and then carry it into my quiet space. I like that a lot. Momma tells you to give me gentle pet-pets and a kiss, you give really nice kisses.

Sometimes I get really excited and I will push past you to run inside, or go somewhere. Sorry about that little dude. I don’t mean to, I just have lots of fun energies inside my paws. They make me spring and jump sometimes. I don’t do that with you, but I do run, run, run, and get it out when we’re outside or when we play with the ball. You threw the ball a lot for me today. You tried to chew the ball and that was funny because I wanted to chew it too! We have the same basic instincts, us doggies know what’s good stuff.

I love you Leo.

Gentle pets.

Twenty seven Paws

Dear Leo,

Today we were under attack. The yellow jackets were after us in the back yard, “AGHHHH,” ear, arm, and paw flapping commenced! (That means took place, lil dude you’re working on your vocabulary…) We survived though. Mom rescued us and you went to play and do human things in the front yard for a while. I watched you out our secret window for a while and then I got tired so I relaxed and fell asleep.

Sometimes when you leave and I can see you, I get more worried because I want to be right next to you to protect you and momma. You were playing, “Poke all the things outside with a stick!” That’s a fun game. Sometimes I like to play, “Poke all the things with my nose, and then taste them…” but that’s not really a human game to play, just a doggy one. I know that you tried to play along with me but our parents didn’t like it when you put things in your mouth like bark dust, dirt, and rocks. I thought it was pretty funny though and so I ran around to show you that. Keep exploring, and I’ll be your trusty side kick lil buddy. I love you so!

Twenty six paws

Dear Leo,

I can still beat you with my agile speed when we go bounding up the stairs. I’m super fast Kimmy dog! Although, you’re gaining on me lil’ one. When momma or daddy hold your hands you can stand and swing each leg one after the other to get up the stairs at super Leo speed!

I’m not sure when all that happened, but you seem proud-happy when you get up the stairs. I used to feel that way too because I was scared of the stairs. Believe it or not, momma and daddy tried to teach me how to go up and down the stairs like a doggy should, but really, it just took a lot of practice for me to do it. I was nervous that I might fall so I would run quickly down the stairs in the hopes that I would get there faster. That did not always work out well, but at least I tried! High paws to you LDB. You’re becoming a little boy, and not so much a baby anymore. But, you’ll always be my baby puppy. I love you.

Twenty five paws

Dear Leo,

This morning you woke up a little bit early, but you fell back asleep, so I did too. That was nice, but then momma was calling me from upstairs telling me to come see you, she just doesn’t get it sometimes. I saw you in our dream…parents. When we went on our walk I was super duper happy, but you cry-cried a few times because I have figured out that it is hard for you to transition or change from one thing that we do to the next. I used to feel that way too. I would run around the yard again, and again, and again, and again, you get the idea, until I felt like coming back to momma and daddy. But now, for the most part, I come when they call me because I have to set a good example for you baby.

So, what were we talking about, oh yeah, the walk! I was super excited-s to go on a walk and you were not because you needed to play more outside with the thing on the wheels that I don’t like. So we played more, and then we came inside which was upsetting to you, I’m sorry Leo. I knew you would like our walk once we got going though! You held onto momma’s keys the whole time, but then you tried to eat them and that was a very doggy thing to do. You must have gotten that from me! Here’s to chewing on things, spotting na-ni-na’s aka squirrels and me chasing them! I love you!

Dear Leo,

Today you went on a big kid slide at a park with some friends. I could smell the slide on you when you got home. You even brought me a pinecone so I could get some park time too! Sometimes I feel sad when you leave with momma and dada, but then I curl up on the couch and take long naps and I see you in my dreams. Then you’re home and I feel better!

One of my favorite things is when we get you up in the morning or at nap time and you call out my name! I love that! We’re best buddies little guy. Thanks for that.

xoxo

Twenty Three Paws

Dear Little puppy brother,

Hi. It’s Kimmy again. I just wanted to tell you that I’m sorry I ate the piece of banana that you flung on the floor this morning. I’m not sure why you decided to do that, because I know you love the bananas as much as me. But, just so you know, I love the bananas too! I don’t like it when you growl and stomp towards me when we get the morning bananas before the oatmeal, so I kinda sorta didn’t feel so bad about eating your dropped banana. But then, when you were cry-crying about it, I felt the sad feelings too.

You don’t need to cry though little guy, momma had more for you in your bowl! Just know this next time, try a yawn or a big sigh, that helps me when I’m feeling sad or stressed or the anxious feelings come up too. Sometimes I like to shake my head and my floppy ears also. It helps to get the jitters out of my body and back into the air. So, next time you feel the sad feelings, what are you going to do? Yawn, sigh, or shake it off little guy! Ok, off to banana land for nap time!  See you soon LDB!
