Dear Leo,

Sometimes in life we get frustrated. I think you’re going through a stage of puppy life when you get frustrated easily because, let’s face it baby, life is rough for us. Momma and dada don’t speak doggy and they don’t speak baby, but I know they’re working on it. Although, I take that back, occasionally momma and dada bark or woof and it is quite on par with dog lingo, so they’re getting pretty darn close!

This morning we had a cold walk outside, but honestly, any time we have a walk, I’m a happy doggy. I love to take you on a walk. It’s one of my favorite parts of the day. Then we played in the house and you were making all sorts of foodies in your kitchen. There was a lot of clatter and slamming around, so I steered clear of helping out for fear something might bump my nose. I speak from experience. Then we played outside for a while in the sunshine. I love the sun! I miss it in this rain fall! Sometimes we have liquid sunshine in Oregon, but mostly I like the sun in the sky. You were digging in the dirt with your shovel thingy and then flinging it around. It was all fun and games until you flung it on your face, your eye, and your body. You didn’t seem too fond of that experience, so you went to momma and she wiped you off. I tried to warn you by running around and getting you engaged in a game of chase, but you didn’t seem to catch the clue. Anyway, momma has been typing for me so I will give her a break. Have a nice nap baby. I love you.

Playing inside on the rainy day!

Dear Leo,

Today there is a cool crispy feeling outside. We still played with the ball, or as I like to say, Kimmy leaps for the ball and Leo screams. Sometimes I’m not even really sure what we’re playing, but whatever it is, I like it.

When we went on our walk this morning we counted the na-ni-nas together. Whenever you would spot one you’d say, “Baby! Na-ni-na!” I think the squirrels are rather skittish this time of year. They run about again and again, with giant seeds in their mouths hopping about our fences and flinging themselves into trees. I’m going to tell you something Leo, I’ve never told any four pawed friend before, I hope that when I come back in my next life, it’s not as a squirrel, but perhaps as a bird. There’s something a bit too rodent-like that exacerbates the rules of decorum with squirrels. I much prefer the air, specifically the currents that carry all of the great smells my way. So, naturally of course I would want to take to the sky, in the next life I lead, as a bird.

Night night lil dude,

Dear Leo,

It’s sunny today, but it’s also super windy. Sometimes when the wind blows so hard, my ears fly up into the air. Momma and daddy call me, “bat dog,” when that happens. I’m not so sure what that means, but usually it’s followed by pets or kisses so I like that a lot. You love to watch the leaves blow down from the sky and fall to the patio. Then you rush over to find the best leaf and put it into the red bin, as momma calls it. I like to rush over to you and check the smells from the tree tops. You just can’t reach up that high when you’re grounded like us doggies. The squirrels that taunt us seem to defy gravity and get up to the tree tops by jump-flying. The other day we raced outside to chase a squirrel friend, but it jumped from the fence into a nearby tree by flying off the fence and into the air. I thought it was a ‘gonner, but nope, it kept sailing and landed on the tree branch! Those squirrels, they’re nutty….get it, because they eat nuts! Haha, ok, now it’s nap time!

Dear Leo,

Today we got you up early so you could wave to the waste management specialist. I like to say garbage person! You love the garbage truck, goodness do you love it. I was very concerned about why daddy was running you down the stairs and then I sat and watched the whole scene unfold. You do like to wave at all the people, trucks, planes, and trains. I prefer to run around and bark at them, that’s one difference between you and I. Then, we didn’t take our normal Leo and Kimmy walk this morning. You went to somewhere with the mama in the car. I was a little bit sad that I couldn’t come, but then you came back after a few naps for me and you smelled terrific! You didn’t sound too happy, but you had interesting smells all over you. I think you went somewhere that our friend Stephanie and Carter were at because I smelled them too.

I love your baby friends. You were cry-crying when you came in the house. I think you were hungry because you cried through your first banana bites, but then you were happy about oatmeal snack and banana. I liked it too, I helped watch to catch anything that might have fallen off of you. Momma took you to take your nap right after that because you were still kind of sad after the food was gone. I didn’t mind too much because I went outside in the sunshine with momma and now I’m napping and dictating the story to momma for you. See you in our dreams lil guy.

xoxo, Kimmy

Dear Leo,

Today we did the unspeakable, the parents put me, not you, into the bathtub. What a travesty! They wasted so much good drinking water on making me smell bizarre. I was just beginning to feel like I was at that, “smelling good,” dog stage, and they bathed me. You were trying to help me with the bath, but I wasn’t having it, so I hid in the closet until momma dragged me out and wheelbarrowed me into the bathtub.

You see Leo, dogs do not like baths as much as babies do. No matter how much water, cajoling, or songs are involved. To sum it all up, dad finished the dirty job of, “the bath,” while you and mom got my new bedding ready for me. I was quite ecstatic to exit that room and get back to my normal smells as soon as possible. I smell a bit better, especially after running around in the muddy backyard. It helped level things out between bath and doggy smell. Thanks for throwing the ball for me and trying to make me feel better about the bath. I can tell that you are there for me, and I’m there for you, and you’re there for me and so on and so forth. I love you!

Dear Leo,

This morning we did a lot of what mom calls, yard work in the garden. We pulled out all the metal thing-a-ma-jigs that held up the plants. Mom pulled out all the stems, leaves, and old plants. You helped out lots too, so naturally I chipped in as well. I stood right next to mom and you to make sure you were safe, even if you needed to walk somewhere, I was right there to guard you. You can never be too careful, especially when we’re outside baby!

Then mom went to the front yard and got the giant monster bin for all the plants! That was super exciting because she discovered two of my poopy spots! You pointed out where I’d done my business and we all scooped it up. It was a super fun time. I’m not quite sure why humans need to move my poops, but, regardless, they do and I’m used to it now. You’re still quite fascinated by it all and enjoy the morning hunt for the numbers two’s in life. I digressed… where was I?

Oh yes, so we decided to put all the plant stuff mom had pulled out into the big bin. That was exciting for you because mom opened the bin. So you were laughing and saying lots of things, so I decided to run around in a circle to show how excited I was for you. I even tried to help put some of the plants into the bin by picking them up with my mouth. Mom didn’t like that though, so I spit them back out. You were helping her put old vegetables like the beans, and the carrot you pulled out, and the tomatoes onto the table for us to have later. You also collected special leaves and put them on the table for safe keeping. We were really busy little babe. You got super tired and crank-ies so I helped you by encouraging you to go upstairs for your nap time, I licked your face and neck a lot even when you were crying to make you feel better. For some reason you cried even louder, but I never tasted any tears, so I’m not sure if you were crying or kvetching, as momma says. See you in dreamland baby.

Dear Leo,

Today we got up a little bit later than usual. Sometimes your baby sleep schedule runs over the, “wake up time.” I love you though, even with an early wake up routine. Your smile, or call to me in the morning makes my day start off great.  But, I must confess, I was very upset today because you did not have a restful nap-nap sleep. Mom put me in the garage when the smelly bug person came to the house. I didn’t like that, but I was a good dog, and I played on the towel on the carpets in the garage like I was told. You did the cry-cry and then you fell asleep. You woke up, a little while later though. So I didn’t get my whole nap. I’m feeling a bit sleepy now. You’re eating bread with peanut butter and apples. These are three of my favorite things. It’s torture, but I know that if I prevail I will get some peanut butter. YUM! I love you Leo.

See, there you go, giving me your fingers to lick, Sluuuuurrrrrrrrrp!

Dear Leo,

Today you didn’t take your baby nap-o-nap like you usually do. So, do you know what that meant for me, your doggy? I didn’t have a nappy nap either. I was so tired by bedtime. You were too! You kept falling on your bottom and getting up, running around, playing, and then flopping onto your bottom again. I was very concerned about you. So that meant that I needed to follow you around and boop you subtly in your back or your bottom. Maybe that’s why you were falling? I don’t know, but I just want to make something clear. The Kimmy doggy needs her sleep and naps, ok? So from now on, let’s just agree that you need to nap and I will do the same. Then we’re all rested and can PLAY outside and dig in the ground together when you get up! Night-night baby. Sleep tight.

Forty Four Paws

Dear Leo,

Last night dad discovered tiny moving creatures in the office room. Momma and dada don’t like the tiny critters. They really like our home though. Sometimes they even like my doggy bowl or food bowl. I’ve been around longer than you my little brother, so I know, steer clear of the tiny creatures, especially if they’re walking in a line. Daddy got the white stuff and put it into water with another powdery thing, he shook, shook, shook it up and they put cotton into it and then place it all around the creatures pathways. Personally, I checked out after I knew it wasn’t for me. So I took an early bedtime nap while they took care of the creature situation.

Oh! I just remembered, you saw these things and called them ants, when we were playing outside. Momma showed you them, and we watched as Charlotte the spider ate some in her sparkly web. Your big humans are into giving everything a name little guy. If it were me, I would just call it, “eight legged creature that moves fast.” I’m not sure why they decided to call it Charlotte, but that’s what they do. So all the eight legged creatures are Charlottes. So far there’s about four of them. Ok, I gotta nap now. I love you.

Forty Three Paws

Dear Leo,

Today you woke up the house way too early little guy. 5 am is not ok in Kimmy land. So I curled back up and went to sleepy town again. Mom came and visited me too early. So I ignored her and continued to sleep on the couch. I did this even after she gave me two kiss-kisses on my head. I liked the kisses, but I just couldn’t get up. Then you really got up at 6:45. That was ok timing.

So I did some yoga after momma. I showed her how to properly do the downward dog. She tries, but she’s not a doggy like me and like you can do. She needs to work on her leg angle. It helps if you do the doward dog when you’re getting off the couch-y bed. That works really well. I also like it when I do the doggy yoga and you walk underneath me. That’s fun. Well, it’s fun until I bump-bump you with my legs and then you do the cry-cry, so I have to lick your face and ears. That stops the crying really fast. Momma and dada don’t realize that all they need to do is lick your ears. That makes you stop crying and giggle. Humans, they just don’t get it like us dogs do. Love you baby.
