Sixty Two Paws

Dear Leo,

Sometimes, when you don’t want to climb up the stairs you lay flat on the landing staircase that I like to sit upon. Then I have the challenging job of stepping around your small body in order to get up the stairs. Sometimes you start rolling around, and then the big humans help you get up the rest of the stairs. I’m not really sure why you want to roll around on the stairs anyways. A bed, or the upstairs is a much better spot, but there could be a really good smell there that you’re trying to get up. I do that occasionally. I like to stick my nose in really deep to get all the hound doggy smells I can.

On an unrelated note, it was incredibly windy today.  I was speaking about smells, which can really just send me off on a tangent. I received so many smells all at the same time in the air this morning. Momma was in her giant coat with the fluffy hood and standing there waiting for me to do my business thing. I told her to go inside with my eyes, but she hollered at me to go potty! How unrealistic of her, I didn’t have that option when I was receiving so many smell currents at once! I finished with my sniffs and then came inside. If you had been there with me you would have understood.

I love you baby,

“No photos momma, this is nap time!”

Sixty One Paws

Dear Leo,

Tonight you had a big cry-cry before you went to sleep. It was really hard for momma and dada too. They just wanted to hold you all night, but they can’t do that. I offered to sleep with you, but I get up and move around a lot, so I don’t think it will work out for me to sleep in your room all night, maybe one day when you’re bigger I can! I slept at momma’s feet and helped ease her feelings.

I have secret powers! Did you know that? I can soak up all the sad feelings in a person, or as much as I can and I help them feel better. Sometimes I can do that if they let me sit on their lap, but for some reason, not a lot of people besides momma and dada let me do that though. I am 86 human pounds, I don’t see what the big deal is though? I feel like I am only 12 pounds like when I was a puppy! Anyway, you’re sleeping really soundly now, as momma says, and so am I. Momma knows what to write for me because I send it to her telepathically, that’s a good word for your vocabulary box!

I love you baby,

Kimmy

“Here, smell my stuffed animal baby!”

Sixty Paws

Dear Leo,

Sometimes you play this game that momma calls, “keep-a-way.” You go and take one of the stuffies that I’m playing with, bring it to momma, and tell her something in your language that means, “hold this momma so Kimmy can’t have it,” and then you walk away. So I do what comes natural and I go get the toy back! We played that for a while this morning. Back and forth went the elephants, back and forth I went to retrieve them. I like to chew on them because they smell like me now, nice and doggy-like.

There’s nothing quite like a good chew to make you feel better about things in life. So often I’m told, “Kimmy no, or please move Kimmy, or not right now Kimmy,” so occasionally I take the power back kid, and I chew on the stuffed animal even if you don’t want me to! So there. I still love you, even when I get doggy frustrated. That’s why I chew on the stuffy. It helps. You should try it sometime, or better yet, don’t, because then I’ll have to fight you for something to chew on. Ok, this is just getting silly, I’m going back to my nap. Finish up the typing for me momma. See you soon buddy!

“Shhh mama, nap time!”

Fifty nine paws

Dear LDB,

The sun has returned. We romped around the backyard for a while this morning and then we played inside for a bit. You went on an adventure with momma and I found a good spot in the sunshine and took a nap. Sometimes I just like dreaming about my humans, and then you guys come back really quick.

One of my favorite things is when you come in the house and call for me and tell me about your excursion. Sometimes you burry your face in my fur and giggle. I always feel all the happiness flow into me when you do this. You are like no other puppy baby, I love you so!

Digging around together.

Fifty Eight Paws

Dear Leo,

Today you came home and you smelled funny. You smelled like, funny water with chlorine. It reminded me of when dada would come home and smell like that after he was doing the swimming thing for a year. I think you had a fun time though because you were super excited to pet me and then eat banana. I liked both of those things so that was great!

For some reason the morning time felt like it went by really fast. I didn’t get to take you on a walk like I normally do, so, maybe we’ll do that together after our nap time. We did see the garbage man today, that was super exciting. All of a sudden momma got you up and out of bed early and I was ready and waiting by the door to say hi to you. The garbage truck is a loud, green machine, that makes everything go, BAM! You like to watch and motion for the lever to dump the bins. I get kind of scared with the sounds, so I watch through our secret window for the dumping part, and I greet you when you come back inside. I feel better once we’re all together. Speaking of which, I’d rather be sleeping in your room right now, but momma felt it was better for me to snooze on their bed, so that’s where I am. I have to go look for you at the park in our dream. I better hurry up so I don’t miss out on any of the ball throwing. I love you LDB!

Always by momma’s side. Oh, and a box.

Fifty Seven Paws

Dear Leo,

Today, some people were at the na-ni-nah tree when we rounded the corner coming home. This was bad news for those na-ni-nah’s because as we all know, the squirrels rule the block. Their home was chip-chopped into parts because it was, “overgrown,” according to the owners of the property. Personally, I think those squirrels will have a hard time relearning some of their tree branch routes that they can jump to, but you know what? Survival of the fittest baby. They seem to do just fine flinging themselves from our fence to the wetland trees so I’m sure they’ll be fine.

You were quite curious about what was happening and you kept running to the front windows to look out, point, grab momma or me and show us the to-doings of the block. I was more concerned about getting my fifth morning nap in and so I kept returning to the couch bed. Although, you can be quite entertaining, especially when you shrilly call my name and want to show me more. I can’t say no to my baby needing my comaraderie. I love you baby!

“Lead the way little buddy!”

56 Paws

Dear Leo,

Today we were playing outside and you took both of the balls. But you didn’t share. So I took one of them back. That didn’t go over so well though. There were some loud tiny human feelings shared, and then we worked on sharing. Momma was patient with me and I tried to be patient when she was teaching me about sharing with you. Sometimes all those things are hard baby. Even for big sister dogs.

After that we counted all the airplanes that flew by, picked up leaves, and kicked down the mushrooms that had sprouted up. I love being outside with you. I think it’s your favorite too. Even when it is kind of wet outside and we have our paws wiped, I would still do it with you. Love you munchkin.

“I’m holding up the blanket fort by being on the couch, and napping is a perk, ok mom?”

Fifty five Paws

Dear Leo,

Yesterday it rained. Today it rained. I bet it’ll rain tomorrow. The Californian in me is wishing to see the sunshine again. Although, I shouldn’t complain because I really enjoyed our morning walk together. You, momma, and dada, always make sure that we go on a walk, no matter what, well unless it is raining tiny balls, then we don’t go out because, well, those hurt the fur. Today we started out our walk with no rain. Then, we pulled over underneath a tree, which was a very strange choice for our momma to make. She had to put on her extra layer of fur, and then she put on this weird layer on your stroller so that the rain bounces back off, sometimes it bounced onto me!

After all that business, I didn’t have to sit anymore and we got to keep walking, I liked that part. I just take care of all the rain in the garage and the house. Sometimes it works best to shake off on the human, then the rain really gets off of me and onto the nearby person. You don’t know how to shake off very well yet. I try to show you, but you seem to think that rolling around on the ground is the way to go, which, you can do, because that works fine, but that’s not, “the shake.” I must admit though, your version of shaking off is pretty cute baby. I love you.

“The wolfie dog just doesn’t know how to sit up on his own.”

Fifty four Paws

Dear Buddy,

You’ve been doing this new thing lately where you come up to me when I’m minding my own business and playing with a stuffed animal. You seem to think it’s ok to grab the stuffed animal from me and then give it to momma. Why do you do that lil’ dude? I was playing with it. Momma gives it back to me and you have all sorts of feelings about that. Usually you do some pointing, some loud talking, and some stomp-stomping. Then we work it out with a pet and a brief human explanation that I tune completely out because I have things to chew! I think you are confused about which stuffies are for me and which ones are for you. I get it, I know which ones are for you and I only occasionally give them some slobber licks from me. Then there are the elephants that I give all my doggy energies to and I chew the blazes out of them, and give them hard shake shakes. I always feel so much better after a good shake! You and I are both sleeping hard during our nap times. We had a big morning in the rain and watching all the squirrels run around outside. Love you lil guy,

“Shh, I’m a pillow and I’m sleeping.”

Fifty three Paws

Dear Leo,

Today you went to the place that smells like old books and baby feet. Momma calls it the library, I call it the smelly place. You also smelled like soap, I think that’s because you had bubbles pop on your hair at some point. You seemed quite happy about coming home and you really enjoyed your banana.

I ate a little bit of banana, and you seemed upset about sharing even the tiny piece! Baby, let me explain something. I’ve been here for a while. The peanut butters, bananas, apples, and pretty much anything that falls to the ground is also a favorite of mine. So, I think we need to strike up an agreement here about sharing. Momma says, “Sharing is caring,” so I think you should listen to her. Now I know that we both agree that momma and dada are in charge and sometimes that is frustrated, but they know best, most of the time. Following that, I know best. So, being the one that knows best, it’d be great if you shared your ‘nanas with me from time to time. I love you little munchkin.
